Getting through your divorce is a trying time. However when you are through it and need a little bit of guilty indulgence, what better way than to log into your favourite online video viewing channel, choose a feel good film, slip into your most comfy clothes, sit back and relax, you deserve it!

1. Kramer vs. Kramer 


Starring Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. Ted Kramer’s wife leaves him, allowing for a lost bond to be rediscovered between Ted and his son, Billy. But a heated custody battle ensues over the divorced couple’s son, deepening the wounds left by the separation.


It’s an old film but the acting is superb and was well deserved of the Oscar nominations it received. 


2. Mrs Doubtfire 


Starring Robin Williams and Sally Field After a bitter divorce, an actor disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children held in custody by his former wife. 


Great comedy and fantastic performance from two major actors from the 90’s. 

Even though it was aired in 1993, it’s still a great film!   


3. It's Complicated


Starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin

When attending their son’s college graduation, a couple reignite the spark in their relationship. But the complicated fact is they’re divorced and he’s remarried.


Comedy, drama, romance and a had a good storyline! 


4. First Wives Club 


Starring Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn 

Reunited by the death of a college friend, three divorced women seek revenge on the husbands who left them for younger women.


If you need to watch a film that incorporates comedy, cheating husbands and women seeking revenge, this is the film for you! 


5.  Her 


Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson

In a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.


A mix of drama, romance and sci-fi, Joaquin Phoenix plays a lonely divorced writer, that spends his time playing computer games, instead of writing. The whole concept is very different, however is excellently acted.


6. Under the Tuscan Sun  


Starring Diane Lane, Raoul Bova, Sandra Oh 

A writer impulsively buys a villa in Tuscany in order to change her life.


If you are looking for a bit of escapism, this comedy, drama, romance may do the trick! Going through a divorce and escaping the lure of Tuscany, ignor the cliches and just run with it...



7. She Devil 


Starring Meryl Streep, Roseanne Barr, Ed Begley Jr.

A surprisingly resourceful housewife vows revenge on her husband when he begins an affair with a wealthy romance novelist.


Nothing better than a sarcastic comedy to cheer you up. An underrated film that doesn’t disappoint.


8. Blue Valentine 


Starring: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, John Doman

The relationship of a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.


It may not be a ‘feel good’ movie, however it appears more realistic than the happy go lucky type. The acting is superb and the switching from past to present, different from your average movie. 


9. Sliding Doors 


Starring Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, John Lynch

A London woman’s love life and career both hinge, unknown to her, on whether or not she catches a train. We see it both ways, in parallel.


Nothing to do with divorce, however lots of ‘what if’s’ This comedy, romance/drama gets you wondering if our destiny has already been written and how in a split second your life can change considerably. A thoughtful well-acted movie.


10. The Squid And The Whale 


Starring: Owen Kline, Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney

Follows two young boys dealing with their parents’ divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980s. This comedy is a family drama illustrating the relationship complexities of family divorce. 


The acting and script are fabulous and the characters very likeable. You can really relate to the storyline and even though it wasn’t action packed, it really had you investing in the characters.
